When I’m navigating conflicts or disagreements with my partner, help me to access relationship counseling or communication tools, so that we can address issues constructively and strengthen our relationship.

Meet Sarah and Alex, a couple deeply committed but grappling with navigating conflicts effectively. Sarah, entrenched in her habitual approach to resolving issues, often opts for avoidance when faced with disagreements. A recent argument with Alex highlighted the inadequacy of her usual pattern in fostering a constructive resolution. In this moment of struggle, Sarah’s brain regions associated with conflict resolution and emotional regulation became active.

Recognizing the adverse impact of their conflicts on their relationship, Sarah embarks on Step 1, questioning the relevance of their habitual conflict resolution patterns and seeking metrics to understand the impact on their relationship’s health.

In Step 2, Sarah delves into research on relationship counseling and communication tools, envisioning the outcome as a stronger, healthier relationship.

Step 3 sees Sarah developing outcome statements and setting a timeline for seeking counseling or utilizing communication tools to address conflicts constructively.

Sarah prioritizes relationship counseling in Step 4, aiming for constructive communication and addressing their conflict resolution patterns.

Both Sarah and Alex commit to attending counseling sessions in Step 5, reflecting their shared values and commitment to improving their relationship.

Step 6 involves organizing the action plan into their schedule, ensuring they allocate time for counseling sessions and include supportive resources.

In Step 7, they take the leap by attending counseling sessions together and employing communication tools recommended by their counselor, marking the start of progress toward constructive conflict resolution.

As they advance (Step 8), they evaluate their experience, considering adjustments to their approach, always with the goal of strengthening their relationship.

Step 9 prompts them to modify their communication strategies and conflict resolution approaches based on their counseling learnings, returning to Step 2 for continued review and refinement.

Finally, in Step 10, they share their positive experiences with friends, advocating for the benefits of seeking counseling and using communication tools to foster a healthier relationship.

Their journey from habitual conflict avoidance to actively seeking counseling, driven by the outcome statement, resulted in a more constructive approach to disagreements, measured against their prior struggles with conflict resolution. This collaborative effort became the optimal outcome for strengthening their relationship.
