Lesson 1.3 – Up and Down Regulation Triggers

  1. Cognitive Domain (Knowledge, Comprehension, Application)
    1. Define the term “unmet need” and explain how it triggers decision-making processes in the brain.
    1. Identify the trigger of the Automatic Decision System and how it responds to the trigger
    1. Identify the trigger of the Deliberate systems and how it responds to the trigger
    1. Recognize common situations (e.g., career choice, relationship change) where a “struggling moment” might lead to up-regulation from the Automatic to the Deliberate system.
  2. Affective Domain (Receiving, Responding, Valuing)
    1. Acknowledge the importance of the Cingulate Cortex’s role in conserving energy and making safe decisions by discussing how this relates to one’s own decision-making habits.
    1. Express a willingness to explore personal experiences with “struggling moments” as a way to recognize up-regulation triggers in oneself.
    1. Demonstrate curiosity by identifying one’s own automatic responses to familiar situations versus situations that require thoughtful decision-making.
  3. Psychomotor Domain (Perception, Set, Guided Response)
    1. Practice identifying physical or emotional cues that signal a “struggling moment,” such as increased heart rate or frustration.
    1. Role-play a simple scenario where the Deliberate decision-making system is triggered, such as deciding stress, and demonstrate behaviors that align with deliberate thought (e.g., pausing, deep breathing).
